Pacific Ring of Fire or the Pacific Ring of Fire (English : Ring of Fire ) is an area of ​​frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions around the Pacific Ocean basin . This area is shaped like a horseshoe and covers a territory of 40,000 km . This area is also often referred to as the Pacific seismic belt .

Approximately 90 % of earthquakes and 81 % of the largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire . The next earthquake zone ( 5-6 % of earthquakes and 17 % of the largest earthquakes ) is Alpide belt which extends from Java to Sumatra , the Himalayas , the Mediterranean up to Atlantika . Next is the Mid - Atlantic Ridge
